Internet marketing isn’t going away any time soon, but there are plenty of people out there who still think it’s all a flash in the pan. It’s a nearly constant refrain on the morning business television shows, the belief that the Internet bubble is going to pop again, just as it did in the early 90s. Never mind that the popped Internet bubble didn’t result in a collapse of the Internet – far from it. In fact, it cleared the way for the startup of major Internet players like Google, Facebook and Amazon. And while there have been some casualties along the way, such as Myspace, there are far more success stories than most people realize. Here are just a few of the Internet marketing trends you should be watching closely. If your SEO agency isn’t using them already, you’ll be hearing about them soon enough from those of us who are.

KLOUT

KLOUT is a social media marketing tool and measurement paradigm that’s becoming well-known among Internet marketing folks. It uses a proprietary algorithm to measure the influence that people have online, and that influence translates into marketing muscle in the right hands. KLOUT assigns a number to each member to measure how much reach they have within their social circles, making it easy for businesses to find the all-important influencers who can boost the visibility of their products.

Rich Snippets

Snippets are the summaries that appear beneath the title on the Google search results pages. Google pulls the snippets from the page HTML. Your SEO agency should be using the HTML meta tags recognized by Google to customize the snippets for your website. You can list prices for retail sites, show photos with recipes and menus and take advantage of other special formatting that brings extra attention to your link on the search engine results pages.

Responsive Display Ads

Banner ads have never really gone away, but they’re back in a big way. New technologies, however, make them both more noticeable and less intrusive. Display ads now respond to mouse overs, page positioning and length of time on page, among other things.

Local SEO

Every SEO agency worth its name should be using localization strategies, particularly for businesses that depend on local customers. Dentists and other professional services, retail stores, restaurants and other companies all benefit from local SEO when it’s done right.

Talk to your SEO agency to find out how well they’re keeping up with the trends and analyze which Internet marketing strategies they’re using to boost your sales and visibility online.  If they aren’t, give us a call and we’ll get your site up to speed in order to maximize its productivity.
